Grindon Farm is rich in a variety of archaeological features, and is immediately west of the Howden
Hill area of Greyside Farm that we have previously surveyed.
The survey will therefore complete a continuous stretch from Carr Edge near
Newbrough to Sewingshields that NOWTAG will have surveyed over the past decade.
Please reply as soon as you can to indicate whether and, as far as possible, when you would like to participate. As ever, no previous experience is required as any training will be provided on site. Full
meeting-up information and other details will be sent once you have indicated an interest in taking part.

We are following up on last year's survey on Greenlee and Stonefolds with a survey on neighbouring Gibbs Hill Farm, continuing from where we started surveying on the final day of last year's Level 1 survey. We are scheduling Monday 20th to Wednesday 23rd for the walkover survey but should bad weather intervene we have scope to finish off on Thursday or Friday. Could you please reply letting me know which days you may be able to participate. It would also be handy to know whether you would be available on Thursday or Friday in the event of any of the planned 3 days having to be postponed.
The essence of archaeology is in recording. Recording in plan and recording in cross –section to relate the stratigraphy across the trenches of an excavation. Whilst surveying a plan of a site has progressed through increasingly sophisticated equipment, from theodolite then total station to precise GPS measurement and onto drone survey, recording heights by Dumpy level has remained a simple technique that amounts to looking at a ruler through a telescope.
A day of practical training in the use of the level will take place on the 24th April at Heddon on the Wall. The day will be run in one hour sessions for 2 or 3 people at a time. The first session will start at 10am with further sessions throughout the day at times to suit those attending.

We will be revisiting the Howden Hill and Middle House areas west of Newbrough from Monday 14th February to Thursday 17th February, with a bad weather option to continue on the Friday if necessary. In 2020 we had worked as three groups spreading out across a wide area. Although this enabled us to get a lot done despite losing a day to snow it meant that nobody got to see the new features discovered by each group. We will therefore be revisiting all locations to give everyone the opportunity to appreciate the rich variety of features that we have now recorded. Additionally we are well aware there are further interesting features that we did not have time to record so we will aim to fill in the remaining gaps.

In 2020 we excavated the central cell of this 3 celled structure and recorded an interesting byre. The finds from our mole hill survey of 2019 suggested domestic habitation at the site, so we will be excavating the eastern-most cell to see if this was indeed habitation. The dig runs from Monday 7th March toThursday 10th March, with the option to finish off on Friday if necessary.

Greenlee Project Landscape Survey. Following up on the desk research carried out by members over the past couple of months we will be starting surveying on the ground during the second half of March. We are working in conjunction with Northumberland National Park on this project and will be confirming starting dates shortly.
